Precaution To Be Taken After Cataract Eye Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in India. We have all heard of someone in our family – parents, grandparents, uncle or aunts having to undergo cataract surgery. When you or your loved ones are handed a diagnosis of cataract and advised to undergo cataract operation, the very thought can give arise to a lot of questions, anxiety and fear. One major apprehension among this is what to expect after the cataract surgery in Delhi.

Cataract operation involves removing the natural eye lens which has become opaque with time and replacing it with artificial lens called IOL. Surgery is generally performed by technique called phacoemulsification. The stiches help faster healing and gentler recovery. Nevertheless all surgeries require some precautions to be taken. Here is the list of Do’s and Don’ts after the cataract surgery in Delhi.

Do’s
  • Do contact your eye surgeon immediately if there is any problem with the eye
  • You can start shaving after 3rd day after the surgery
  • You may resume the activities like TV or shopping after 2-3 days after the surgery. And also you may restart all your household activities after a week
  • Do instill your eye drops as advised by your eye surgeon
  • Before you apply the drops in the eyes make sure they are washed properly with soap and water
  • Wear protective eye cap for about a week during night or as advised by the doctor
  • Clean your eyes with boiled water at least 2-3 times in a day
Don’ts
  • Do not rub your eye with your hands. This can dislodge the stitches if any have been used. Also, it can cause eye infection. If your eye waters or itches, you can wipe it gently with clean tissue or a sterile, moist cotton swab.
  • Do not have a shower bath for first 10 days after the surgery. This doesn’t mean you stay un bathed for 10 days, you can take a bath below the chin and can use the wet towel while cleaning your face.
  • Do not wash your face with normal water for 10 days
  • Do not indulge in activities that might cause damage to your eyes. Do not play with children and do not indulge in sports like swimming for a month to avoid any chance of infections or injuries.
  • Do not lift heavy weights. If possible avoid deep and straining cough, sneezing and straining hard for stool for a month. This might increase the pressure in your eyes.
